The New Sentinel

memories are singing

through me, from me

louder than canyon echoes

i watch us

tinting our expressions

with borrowed confidence

we are the parents now

the aunts, the uncles

wanting to pass along

the tribal rites

link arms in communion

surrounding the young

providing a haven

of knowing, of being

with each other

integral to the clan

remaining elders

test the strength

of our bond and purpose

while relaying again

the lyrics of our song

reluctantly i submit

to the changing of the guard

Terminal

sleep and consciousness battle

flameless candle of control

leaving me to wonder

where crazy lives

ponders and

plays

does

absurd board

a bus to sensibility

others searching maps

missing by fleeting minutes

opportunity for the unexpected

Mind Chasm

here lies the brain spill
vocabulary words
hirsute, fealty, solecism
gone

differential equations
logic tumbling out
if this keeps happening
then

there goes the names
people met, lost
the future might hold
reintroduction

emotions too bid adieu
doubt, sadness, fear
leaving room for others
hopeful

creating space to work
till soil, plant seed
making way for spring’s
growth

Vineyard

grapes on vine grow heavy
while mustard seed entwines
soil shared in growth delight
wait to see the fruit they bear
a seasoned sun shines upon
as we reap and then we sow
next pour the wine of clarity
glass filled with all we know
spice is next to palate cleanse
bring attention to our tongue
speak of truths your honesty
when the day is no more sung

Cherry Sour Candy

oh jolly rancher smile

grin me one that aches

like cherry sour candy

women round the table

anecdotes in late hour

eyes dance in laughter

tribute of recognition

sitting wisdom circle

enlightenment’s gate

holding time hostage

only for the moment

a resolution

long to be anonymous
lurking in shadows
unnoticed and naked
no title attached
alone, standing quiet
silent sentinel to life
a moment untainted

only a moment

no angle or viewpoint
surrounded by activity
sans desire and intent
baptized by awareness
sanctuary of solitude
replenishing to soul
learn to treasure all

Indigo Shadows

i come to you wrapped
in crimson speckled gauze
broken spirit my greatest gift
unable to discern the future
hearing only whispers of the
wistful spirits of ancestors
i choose you over crystal ball
standing at summer’s end watching
sunset usher in your indigo shadows
clinging to the wart of carnal vice
seeking easy distraction, shelley, stoker
like trick or treat housing idle threat
but what of my autumn harvest
faithful fruit and divine offering
can i shed this costume and
return to eden
