Thinking of ways to tenderize:

This is all good for meat

never for a heart

Do not:

marinate on thoughts too long

beat yourself up for failing

pour salt into wounds

stew in your anger

let vinegar sour your disposition

That’s a recipe for tough

not tender

unless you’re just meat

Sterling Song

I kept looking to those purple roses today

wanting perfection

all the words

that would make it plain

without bogging anyone else down

You were here

I am me because you were you

and we were in an intersection of time

both solid and without discernable boundaries

a single note of a sterling song

that remains in tune as each chord is struck

memories building the melody

until the refrain doesn’t need the lyrics

because the moments are the perfection

that create a universal ballad

when one stops to listen to a heart

that grieves a heart that stopped

justin roses

Thumb wars

let me be your stranger

it’s easier to defy expectations that don’t exist

be my other

new , exciting, unknown

steering our moment

disorienting direction

while I discover missing pieces

words before and after

written in the dictionary

Clouds Parting

blessed the sun
at every angle
even when hid
behind cloud
shining on water
varied shores
warming faces
of the unknown
reminding me
that we share
heat and pulse
in varied beats
creating space
offer heart as
empty vessel
making others
our souvenir

Broken Stick

light bends
becoming a divining rod
for color
i push a doll in a buggy
years before i wonder
about you
like an open watch back
i am staring again
wheels spinning
teasing out how things work
wondering if we are
still keeping time
or in need of repair
because something skipped
and now the wand
only finds
shades of gray

On My Mind

what’s on the fridge
some childhood art
life’s freedom painted
from nephew hands

what’s on the table
gifts of light, burned
not saved but spent
in bright friendship

what’s on the counter
wine to share, bread
to break with others
make a meal complete

what’s on the desk
notes, words, paint
pencil, pen, brush
thoughts for later

what’s on the pillow
an inviting spot
to rest my head
in a silent dream

Diamond Trail

walking in my sleep
i notice fermentation
in the stars, falling stars
no insanity, only pure color
beholden by gateway eyes
we have become
unalterable gemstones
etching a path through
cold metal wilderness
dispersing white light
after eating the rainbow
it has lit us on fire
leaving many to
stare at the brilliant
stone of reconciliation
wondering if they can
hold on

Cracked Sky

last call of the night

first walk of the day

cool air on both our faces

winding down, winding up

forever winding

ticktock, ticktock, clock face

circling round and round

text messages, alarm sounds

drip, drip, drip of coffee

steady humming snores

shared space in cool air

good morning, good night

good to be here
