On My Mind

what’s on the fridge
some childhood art
life’s freedom painted
from nephew hands

what’s on the table
gifts of light, burned
not saved but spent
in bright friendship

what’s on the counter
wine to share, bread
to break with others
make a meal complete

what’s on the desk
notes, words, paint
pencil, pen, brush
thoughts for later

what’s on the pillow
an inviting spot
to rest my head
in a silent dream

No Loss

i wondered if today was lost
to holiday laziness and fun
but then i remembered
laughter, wishes, debates
and hugs – leftovers of
home cooked meals
challenged health
being overcome
weather that took
my breath away
then handed it back
holiday news shared
new friendships forging
loved ones eager snoring
i had almost forgotten
each moment a simple gift
now convinced nothing is lost

a resolution

long to be anonymous
lurking in shadows
unnoticed and naked
no title attached
alone, standing quiet
silent sentinel to life
a moment untainted

only a moment

no angle or viewpoint
surrounded by activity
sans desire and intent
baptized by awareness
sanctuary of solitude
replenishing to soul
learn to treasure all

Portrait

do bring your kindest perceptions
when you paint your picture of me
a tired and thoroughly worn vessel
i’m daily fighting to set myself free

it might be that i disappoint some
perhaps i travel an unknown road
worries, fears always in reach here
that type of burden’s a heavy load

this mind wanders into minefields
when left without balance of heart
forgetting the gift is already given
letting doubts try to tear it apart

each morning i step into sunlight
chance is a choice that i’ve made
thankful for beauty surrounding
know debt is with gratitude paid

in anticipation i peek at canvas
find things you think to be true
amazed at all that you capture
the picture of me could be you

Whisper Request

speak of foods that melt in mouth
dreams that land softly on pillows
laughter recalled in darkest night
kisses imprinted on each reunion
fill me up with fragrant serenades
let joyful memories be my bounty
calling me home from masquerade
let cloaks of sadness be checked
fill no hearts with longing regrets
curse only the act to seek a divide
weep losses while knitting them in
nightmares lasting only an instance
whisper me a future of gratitude

Gone Awry

I had some good intentions but they have gone awry… For those that don’t know, I’m working on consolidating my blog and my website. Unfortunately, this is going much slower than originally intended. I had been waiting to acknowledge some awards until my grand unveiling but given delays that will no longer do! 🙂 So, here we go….

A while back I was over at the lovely Luisa Doraz blog, Believe In Yourself , and she was having a wonderful contest about guessing what anniversary she was celebrating. Era, over at Today’s Thought, and yours truly guessed correctly that it was her silver anniversary. We were both awarded the beautiful flowers seen below. I have to admit that I feel like I cheated. I recognized her wedding dress as being very similar to my own. Congratulations again on 25 years of marriage Luisa, I know it comes from lots of love and hard work!

The next award I would like to acknowledge is the Best Blog Award. I actually have had the priviledge to be given this award by two of my wonderful blogging friends, Luisa Doraz at Believe In Yourself and Tasneem Rangoonwala at Laugh Hard! In a time when life is a little stressful and uncertain, they both have brought the gift of laughter back into my life. I can’t thank them both enough for not only the award but the mission they are on to remind all of us to enjoy each day. What greater gift could there be? Please visit them for your own health and happiness!

As luck would have it, each of these awards allows me to pass along the honor to 15 of my other blogging friends. Of course the award immediately reflects back to the gifters but now everyone else on my blogroll can also enjoy and send the love along! This is for all of you!

Coat of Joy

i used to wear joy like a borrowed coat
it didn’t fit quite right, always wondering if
others saw sleeves too long, bunched up
it was old and worn, slightly out of style
often got hung up on the rack in the entry
but then i remembered, we all arrive naked
coats and clothes are just an afterthought
meant to keep us warm

often function is forgotten
dress to impress attitude feels empty, cold
gray coats of sorrow draining color from soul
all the well-fitting suits like heavy heart armor
hurt attached at sleeve

i took the ensemble to the cleaners
now preserved in plastic wrap
pulled joy with silly bright patterns off the rack
shrugged it back on, no more imperfect than me

as i dance in the streets some tatters fall away
creating need for mending, pieces tucked in pocket
looking up i catch a glimpse of other coats of joy
twirling through the crowd, with closer observation
an unfolding vision of multicolored patches
gave in friendship rich as gold
