Half Century

no flapper dress at 50

or tarantulas running wild

no desire for more poison

or acting like a child

communing with the living

not bringing back the past

creating from experience

that’s a high that lasts

spilling food, drink, & secrets

loving knowledge that i own

surrounded by what matters

finding most of it at home

say goodbye to forties

some other decades too

no comparison with others

to myself i am now true

Birthday Fun

Last Friday was my birthday. My sister greeted me with the following poem that she wrote and I just had to share. Birthdays are so much fun! 🙂

Happy birthday to my sister,
from me and the mister
so much fun you can’t resist her,
she’s like a crazy twister
Ooo, look at that faucet, I think it might be a pfister!

Fire Rose

P4040047

this was once

a birthday flower

not my favorite kind

i loved it still

gazing for days

until it wilted

died

i kept this memory

because

like me

it was warm on the inside

with fire on the edges

Relinquishing Keys

tomorrow is a big day for me

my youngest child turns 20

it is the relinquishing of the keys

no longer directing a teenager

now advising a young man instead

directions are meant to be followed

but advice is a new beast, optional

we’ve been practicing for a few years

dealing in advice until he chose not to take it

snapping back to direction, me still driving

i don’t expect this to be easy, it wasn’t before

how embarrassing to catch your mom trying

to steal the keys from the hook, sit in the front

why is this so scary? i know he is ready but

maybe i am the one who is not prepared

handing out maps I seem to have misplaced my own
