Maria ( /məˈraɪ.ə/)

20151103_144544_HDR

here is ancestors’ voice

rising upon the air

encircling

welcome home

allowance

I am

love not lost

preserved in breath

the fill

the unheard

ponders answered

here

now

definitions fall

I am

not to heal

not broken

no path is straight

just forward

nothing destroyed

merely changing form

I am the One who chooses

Today you’ve been gone 27 years

I can’t pull up your silent body as my immediate memory of you

It’s not gone but far away, where it belongs

That’s a long time to reach for your joyful face

Thank you for all that you’ve taught me, for waiting with me these 27 years

I choose to hear your laughter ringing in my heart, to see a grin that held secrets

I choose to go outside and breathe in deeply, the memory of your smell

Maybe hug my dad a little longer because he smells like you

I choose to stop searching for the memories of you unresponsive in my arms

Instead I will replay the sight of you hooking your toes on the front of your swing

and squealing out in delight

Today I choose to replay all of the living moments of your life that I can reach

I choose to loop them through my soul until joyful tears fall freely

Today, every day, I choose to celebrate that we shared life

That I still get to share life with your dad and brothers

with many that I love

I choose to embrace that I am – that I always have been – the best mom that I know how to be

Today
I choose peace

Cherry Sour Candy

oh jolly rancher smile

grin me one that aches

like cherry sour candy

women round the table

anecdotes in late hour

eyes dance in laughter

tribute of recognition

sitting wisdom circle

enlightenment’s gate

holding time hostage

only for the moment

a resolution

long to be anonymous
lurking in shadows
unnoticed and naked
no title attached
alone, standing quiet
silent sentinel to life
a moment untainted

only a moment

no angle or viewpoint
surrounded by activity
sans desire and intent
baptized by awareness
sanctuary of solitude
replenishing to soul
learn to treasure all

Portrait

do bring your kindest perceptions
when you paint your picture of me
a tired and thoroughly worn vessel
i’m daily fighting to set myself free

it might be that i disappoint some
perhaps i travel an unknown road
worries, fears always in reach here
that type of burden’s a heavy load

this mind wanders into minefields
when left without balance of heart
forgetting the gift is already given
letting doubts try to tear it apart

each morning i step into sunlight
chance is a choice that i’ve made
thankful for beauty surrounding
know debt is with gratitude paid

in anticipation i peek at canvas
find things you think to be true
amazed at all that you capture
the picture of me could be you

Edge of the World

sitting on the edge of the world
watching winds capture curtain
i began trying clouds on for size
blowing by as borrowed distress
some looking as wild horses alit
dragging me with the stampede
to high clouds of icy desperation

on clear days forever bloomed
with hope of eternal existence
encircled by a nimbus of faith
cradled in arms of belief until
again a mustang would charge
leaving me to teeter and sway

i no longer pilfer heaven’s robe
gales blast then blow across me
no struggle has been harnessed
with repeating choice to remain
sitting on the edge of the world

If You Look

P6190045

if you look at life as a collection

of memories, celebrations, events

stringing together the pieces can be

like loading a ribbon with jewels

but stones can be semi-precious

they sometimes lose their shine

if you look at life as a journey

at some point you must consider

the trail, where it leads, where it began

perhaps wondering if you misstepped

but herein lies the adventure

while discovering one’s own path

if you look at life as this moment

breathing out and then breathing in

you might glimpse a star in its brilliance

finding out what is already within
